This appendix offers suggestions and recommendations for how to prepare for the certification exam. Since you need to hold a previous Java certification in order to take the OCP exam, we expect that if you are reading this book, this will not be your first Java certification exam. We recommend that you review this appendix, as it provides tips and strategies specific to the OCP exam, especially if you took your last Java certification exam a long time ago.

Studying for the Test

Before you even sign up to take the test, you need to study the material. Studying includes the following tasks:

  • Creating a study plan
  • Reading the Study Guide material
  • Creating and running sample applications
  • Solving the Review Questions at the end of each chapter
  • Creating flashcards and/or using the ones we’ve provided
  • Taking the three practice exams

The book is divided into chapters, each with corresponding exam objectives, to make it easier to assimilate. The early chapters define the building blocks of Java 8, while the later chapters present commonly used Java 8 frameworks. Unless we explicitly state something is out of scope for the exam, you will be required to have a strong understanding of all of the information in this book.
