Conclusion

This chapter covered the concepts, and some of the corresponding technologies, for what I call distributed objects. Distributed objects fall into many categories covered by many terms. Some of these categories and terms include the following:

  • Enterprise computing

  • Distributed computing

  • Middleware

Whatever the terminology used, the power of distributed computing is that many computers operating on the same network share the workload. This has several major advantages—not the least of which relates to security and integrity issues. I would encourage you to read further in this area and explore the implementations provided by various vendors, including Microsoft and Sun.
