On a movie set, smoke is both a blessing and a curse – although far more often it’s a curse. I have never, ever worked on a film set with a smoke machine where it hasn’t malfunctioned, spurted smoke at inopportune times, made soundtrack-destroying noises, caused an allergic reaction for one of the cast, or simply failed to perform when activated. Further, smoke is difficult to control and keep at a constant level. However, I think we’ve all seen it create life in a dead scene or provide a special type of atmosphere that can’t be duplicated any other way.
