Bowline Knot

If you were in the scouts, you may already know how to tie a bowline (see figure 39-1).Many wilderness survival books say that it’s the one knot you should know that can save your life. The bowline (generally pronounced “boelinn”) is useful for less dangerous work in film as well.

The bowline creates a loop that doesn’t tighten or collapse when stress is placed on it. A non-collapsing loop can be good for a thousand and one uses. The loop is useful for any job where a rope needs to be slipped over a pole or hook. Since it doesn’t tighten, there is no binding that needs to be loosened when it needs to be removed.
