Whether you’ve ever been on a professional set or not, I’m sure you’ve seen the boards that snap together before yelling action. The slate or clapper is almost an icon of moviemaking. You can easily construct a slate (see figure 19-1) for your own use whether you’ll be recording to film or direct to video.

While there are many reasons a slate is used, a few of the most important include:
