Chapter 3. Compositing CGI with Bigger Node Trees

These days, Computer Generated Imagery, or CGI, primarily refers to images that are rendered out of 3D software such as Maya, XSI, and Houdini.

Rendering in 3D software can be a very long process. Calculating all the physics required to produce a convincing image is very processor intensive. A single frame can take anything from a minute to eight hours or more to render. Because of this, 3D artists go to great lengths to give the compositor as much material as possible so that the compositor can modify the 3D render without having to go back to the 3D package and re-render.
