Chapter 7 Processes Resulting from the Intensity-Dependent Refractive Index

In this chapter, we explore several processes of practical importance that occur as a result of the intensity-dependent refractive index.

7.1. Self-Focusing of Light and Other Self-Action Effects

Self-focusing of light is the process in which an intense beam of light modifies the optical properties of a material medium in such a manner that the beam is caused to come to a focus within the material (Kelly, 1965). This circumstance is shown schematically in Fig. 7.1.1(a). Here we have assumed that n2 is positive. As a result, the laser beam induces a refractive index variation within the material with a larger refractive index at the center of the beam than at its periphery. ...
