The Dotless i

Generally, ligatures are not used in display type (type in large sizes, above 24-point). If you have a problem with the hook of the “f” bumping into the dot of the “i,” try using the dotless i character: 1 (type Option Shift B, Mac only). Or use the Glyphs palette in InDesign to find and insert the dotless i.

Notice the problem in the “fi” combination.

The dotless i solves this problem so neatly.

This dotless i character also comes in handy any other time the dot gets in the way, as might happen if you use italic swash caps.
