Exorcising Exercise

Sandy told me that she had been struggling with her weight all of her adult life. She wasn’t overweight all the time; it was more that her weight seesawed—sometimes up, sometimes down, then up again, then back down. As she explained it to me, “When I feel like I’ve gained too much weight, I drag myself to the gym to do the elliptical and other machines for a few weeks. I get my weight down, but then I get bored and stop going. And I start gaining weight again.”

When I asked her why she keeps going back to the gym if she has to drag herself there and it bores her, she replied, “What else would I do? I know that’s what I should be doing.”
