Chapter 46. Master the Art of Communication

The most influential method of communication that a leader has at his disposal is his voice. A leader's voice is not solely a vocal instrument; it encompasses communication via the written word and via symbolic gestures. Great leaders are experts in each of these modes of communication.

One of MacArthur's most remarked-on traits was his mastery of the art of communication. He took full advantage of his communication skills, but he rarely talked about them. One of the few statements on record is a 1939 letter in response to a West Point professor's query about the proper objectives of the Academy's English program. MacArthur replied:
