Chapter 18. Be a Role Model

For better or for worse, leaders are the most influential role models within their organizations. Leaders' actions, even more than their words, communicate their values, priorities, and expectations to their followers. Great leaders live up to their words and offer an example that their followers can emulate.

Much of the larger-than-life image that MacArthur created for himself was meant as a model for his officers and troops to follow. He knew that his example as commander set the tone and style of his command. He also knew that it had the power to inspire others.
