An Alternative Vision

AFTER MRS. ALLISON left the PPCD class to stay home with her baby, she was replaced by Ms. Katelyn, which was actually her first name, as opposed to Mrs. Allison’s first-name-sounding last name. (The therapists at Building BLOCS, meanwhile, used first names without any prefix, so that by the time Marie entered kindergarten, she was so confused about what to call authority figures that she often referred to her schoolteachers by their last name only, as if they were soldiers in her platoon.)
