MARIE HAD BEEN born just before Paul’s second birthday, when things were rapidly shifting from difficult to impossible with him. She was a scheduled C-section because my obstetrician had convinced me that the risks of attempting a natural delivery after my first C-section were not worth it in our case. Aside from my natural genetic tendency to develop large and unpredictable keloid scars, sonograms had revealed that Marie was a giant baby, estimated at over nine pounds. The added strain of trying to deliver such a large baby might cause my old scar to rupture, which could put both of our lives at risk.
