Introduction

The world is a complicated structure of patterns. Many of these patterns recur while others evolve, and new ones are being created as you read these very words. Some patterns are of a universal nature, such as the seasonal cycle, tides, religious celebrations, and so forth. Other patterns are less the effect of universal laws and ritual, more the result of habitual thinking and behaviour. Our daily domestic routines are patterns of human behaviour, as are many of our social activities.
