Without light there’s simply no photograph. Yet the presence of light doesn’t guarantee that the picture will be any good. That part depends on knowing both the factors that make up a night image and how to accurately measure their exposure. This is no easy task. The absence of a primary light source—the sun—means that night illumination consists of an endless supply of artificial lighting. And while such devices may help guide us through the darkness, they’re not as cooperative when it comes to taking photographs.
