SIX MEN FROM DOW JONES and the Communications Satellite Corporation stood in a darkened room in the fall of 1973 at Comsat’s laboratories in Clarksburg, Maryland. With the push of a button, an image of page one of The Wall Street Journal was transmitted to the Intelsat IV satellite twenty-two thousand miles over the Atlantic Ocean, and the satellite retransmitted the image another twenty-two thousand miles back to earth to a receiver in the Clarksburg lab. The round-trip, resulting in identical reproduction of the printed page, took six minutes and twelve seconds.
