Troubleshooting Tools

  • Given a troubleshooting scenario, select the appropriate TCP/IP utility from among the following:

    • tracert

    • ping

    • arp

    • netstat

    • nbtstat

    • ipconfig/ifconfig

    • winipcfg

    • nslookup

The best way to work through this chapter is to try each of the utilities discussed, to get a better idea of how they are used and what they were designed to do. These tools are the core utilities used in the troubleshooting of TCP/IP networks and are used extensively real-world environments. The following sections describe these utilities:

  • ping

  • Trace route

  • arp

  • netstat

  • nbtstat

  • ipconfig and ifconfig

  • winipcfg

  • nslookup

  • route
