Chapter Summary

This chapter outlines the technologies used to create WANs. Each of these technologies has advantages and disadvantages, making some of them well suited for certain environments and completely impractical in others. Each of the technologies varies in terms of media, speed, availability, and cost.

Public networks such as the PSTN and the Internet are the most widely used methods of establishing WANs due in part to their availability, accessibility, and perhaps most importantly, their cost. The downsides of using these networks are security and speed issues.
