VPNs can be divided into various types based on how they are constructed or the goals they are constructed to achieve. This section looks at the various types of VPNs used in the industry today.

Based on the use of encryption or lack thereof, VPNs can be divided into two main categories: encrypted and nonencrypted.

Encrypted VPNs utilize various types of encryption mechanisms to secure the traffic flowing across the public network.
