Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are an integral part of the modern-day's expanding networks. They allow a network's security to stay intact while the network is expanded to incorporate additional elements. This chapter introduces VPNs and how they function. We will discuss the various types of VPNs in order to get a firm grip on how and where you will encounter VPN setups. This chapter lays the foundation for a more-specific discussion of some of the important VPN protocols in the chapters to follow.
