Abstract

The trends have been clear for some time – the growth of IP and mobile data traffic, low-cost Ethernet ports, the revenue shift from voice to data and the packet video explosion. Network convergence, a topic of conversation for over two decades, is finally a reality. Or is it? True, these days it's mostly all packets, all the time, but we're still shy of the finish line. Most voice, mobile data and video are now inside packets, but in many cases, they are still running over TDM transport, such as SDH, SONET or OTN.
