This chapter offered examples of how technology, often purely by speed, could produce alpha, and why this is in keeping with the new view of adaptive markets—efficient, but not perfectly and instantaneously efficient.

Quant managers started out running only index funds, but realized there was more to be made than the few basis points on assets that indexers can charge. The next chapter describes that evolution.
