Diagnosing and Managing Conflict

Abstract

Conflict is complex and often not well understood. This chapter described the assumptions that undergird conflict theories for the purpose of providing a framework for diagnosing conflict. Diagnosis of conflict is a science and an art. Diagnosis is the starting point for resolving or managing conflict. The newly offered conflict theory referred to as “Personal Attachment Theory” suggests that recognizing and disarming one's personal attachments will facilitate conflict resolution. Seven symptoms of conflict must be understood as symptoms and not causes. There are proven methods and skills listed but with the caution that all skills and methods are context dependent.
