Tips for Projecting ROI

Why project ROI at all? Some clients are very bottom-line oriented, and the language of ROI is very meaningful to them. Being able to project ROI shows that you understand your client’s need for a bottom-line impact on business measures. Keep these tips in mind as you start to project ROI for your training projects:

  • Level 4 evaluation and ROI are not the same thing. Level 4 involves the business measure itself. In the example, the level 4 business goal is to reduce the number of escalated grievances by 20 percent. The ROI process simply assigns a monetary value to that business measure (number of grievances) and compares it to the costs. ROI, in fact, is often called level 5 evaluation (Phillips, 1997).
