Chapter 2. WAYS OF SEEING THE NATURAL WORLD

Human Vision and Perception

Learning to See

What Makes a Compelling Nature Photograph?

Nature photography is first and foremost about seeing. Your challenge is to learn to see more effectively with your own eyes and also learn to see like the camera does. As you work on your nature photography, remind yourself that developing your visual skills is the most important part of making pictures that convey your intentions. Fortunately, there are proven methods for developing your visual abilities.

In this chapter you learn about how human vision differs from the camera's view. You also learn some techniques for improving your ability to see the natural world and for developing "fresh eyes" to see familiar places in entirely new ways. With these new skills you'll find that in nature great pictures can be made anytime, anywhere.
