Afghanistan has been called the graveyard of empires. For Barack Obama and George W. Bush, it was the classroom in which they first learned about the harsh and confounding realities of war. While going to war in Iraq was a source of great political controversy, even the voices of the extreme left in the United States shared the view that we had a legitimate interest in going hard after those terrorists responsible for the attacks on Wall Street and the Pentagon.
