In current technologies that pass information along optical fibers, it is necessary to transform the information from optical into electronic signals for actual manipulation of the signal, including routing, switching, and processing. If optical components could be constructed to reliably switch, amplify, route, and modulate optical signals, then it would be possible to construct an all-optical communications system.
