Labofina Test

An empirical test method for determining the effectiveness of oil spill dispersants. The method involves the rotation of a separatory funnel to potentially disperse oil into water. There are several variations of this test, including the Warren Spring Laboratory Test, the Rotating (or Revolving or Rolling) Flask Test, or the Petrofina Rolling Flask Test. See also Mackay Test.

Lacing

In the food industry, the adhesion of a sheet of foam to a glass surface is termed lacing. Example: the sheet of draining foam that adheres to the inner wall of a glass, above the level of bulk liquid, as beer is consumed.

Lacquer

A surface-coating formulation that transforms from the original applied liquid paint to the final solid surface film solely by solvent evaporation, as opposed to other physical or chemical drying mechanisms (such as are involved with the curing of varnishes). Lacquers are usually applied as protective coatings for solid surfaces. Lacquers were originally formulated as resinous materials in a highly volatile solvent, but modern analogs formulated with synthetic esters are now available. Lacquers may be pigmented or clear. See also Varnish.

Lamella

See Foam.

Lamella Division

A mechanism for foam lamella generation in porous media. Typically, when a foam lamella reaches a branch point in a flow channel, the lamella can divide into two lamellae rather than simply follow one of the two available pathways. ...
