Chapter 26. Monitoring Oracle with the Instant Client

If a specific task requires you to manipulate the STDIN and read the STD-OUT of the external program at the same time, another tool is needed, in the form of the module IPC::0pen2.

The following chapter will not introduce any finished plugins, but illustrate how you can build your own Oracle plugin, using an example that monitors Oracle. Some plugins do already exist for this DBMS, such as check_oracle, one of the standard Nagios plugins, or check_oracle_writeaccess[299] by Mathias Kettner. But both of them require the normal Oracle client, and most non-Oracle administrators will be out of their depth attempting to install it.
