The image on the cover is a photograph of the House of the Doves, part of the Mayan ruins at Uxmal.

Uxmal, which means "thrice built," was developed in stages from around 600 AD through 1000 AD. Considered one of the finest examples of Mayan architecture, the ruins at Uxmal are thought to have been mainly a religious center for the surrounding communities. Several of the structures were used for training astronomers, mathematicians, priests, and healers. The ruins are dominated by the Pyramid of the Magician, which, legend has it, was built in one night by the God Itzamna. It actually consists of five pyramids built on top of each other, through several separate stages.
