Buying Discs

The two main types of discs are CD (compact disc) and DVD (digital video disc). The two variations of these types of discs are read-only (-R) and read/write (-RW). A read-only disc allows you to save data on the disc only once. A read/write disc lets you erase and reuse the disc multiple times.

The following explains the purpose of the different disc types available:

  • CD-R This CD allows you to store or write data only once. A typical CD-R can hold just under 80 minutes of audio or more than 700MB of data, depending on the way it’s designed.

  • CD-RW This recordable CD allows you to erase and store data multiple times. CD-RWs can hold as much audio or data as CD-Rs.
