Dragging and Dropping Files into Programs

When you double-click a file icon displayed in the Finder, your Macintosh usually starts the program that originally created that file. However, many files can be opened by different programs.

For example, a Microsoft Word file can be opened by Microsoft Word, TextEdit, Pages (the word processor found in the iWork suite, sold separately by Apple), or even an old copy of AppleWorks. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet can be opened by Microsoft Excel or Numbers (the spreadsheet found in the iWork suite).
