Chances are you have data stored on your computer that you want to store on your iPhone. For example, you might have a huge music library that you want to transfer to your iPhone so you can listen to your favorite songs while you're away from your computer.
If you have crucial names, addresses, or appointments stored on your computer, you'll probably want that information stored on your iPhone as well.
