Chapter 8. FINDING OUT WHO YOU ARE

Sometimes the change we are managing rears up and grabs us by the throat. At a time of crisis, we find out who we are. Either everything that has happened in our lives has prepared us for the trial, or it hasn't. Can we keep our heads? Do we know what we stand for? Can we stay true to our values? These are just a few of the questions a crisis will answer, one way or another.

One night in the 1980s, while attending an Aspen seminar in Sacramento, I received a call from our national headquarters. A man had walked into a television station in St. Louis and claimed to have found a pin in a Girl Scout cookie. He was seen by millions holding the pin and saying, "I found this pin in a Girl Scout cookie."
