Seventh Chords

You obtain a chord of the seventh when you add to the root, third, and fifth of any of the aforementioned triads a fourth note that is a seventh above the root of the chord. This seventh is usually taken from the scale or key in which the triad occurs.

Because you are already familiar with the C major scale, we will study the seventh chords in this key. The chord built upon the first degree, which is called Cmaj7, is obtained as shown in Figure 21.2.
