Abstract

The diversification of farming systems with trees producing useful food and nonfood products is aimed at enhanced agroecosystem functions and poverty alleviation arising out of expanded and enriched trade opportunities in the rural economy. To progress towards these aims we discuss here appropriate domestication strategies, the early phase of a research program involving local farmers, the market opportunities, and the appropriate deployment of improved cultivars.
