Most of today's service provider and enterprise networks are based on the version of Internet Protocol (IP, also known as IPv4) that was designed in the 1970s and early 1980s. Several years ago, a new version of IP (IP version 6, or IPv6) was standardized. IPv6 provides a larger address space and tighter integration of network services (such as IP Quality of Service) with the network-layer protocol.
