15.7. Summary

Verification tests are an important step in the MPEG-4 process of developing standards. These tests are aimed at verifying that the new standard has reached the goals specified by the initially defined requirements. The results of these tests are suitable to estimate the improvement introduced by the new technology and to determine a minimum threshold in terms of achievable performance by systems based on that standard, as improvements certainly can be introduced by optimizing the implementations. Verification tests are one of the elements the industry can take into account in deciding whether to bet on the new standard.
