15.4. Content-Based Coding Test

To fulfill the MPEG-4 functionalities presented in Chapter 1, typical video frame-based coding was no longer enough; thus, the object-based data model was adopted for MPEG-4. Because encoding a video sequence as a composition of objects requires coding not only the texture but also shape data (see Chapter 8), it is important to know at which cost in terms of subjective quality come the content-based functionalities made possible by the independent coding of the video objects. This section describes the content-based coding test that had the target of comparing the subjective quality performance of MPEG-4 object-based coding regarding MPEG-4 frame-based coding.
