9.7. Summary

In this chapter, an overview of the MPEG-4 Visual SNHC tools was presented. SNHC work began in 1994 in the context of the MPEG-4 project, as a new type of activity in MPEG. MPEG-4 SNHC combines graphics, animation, compression, and streaming capabilities in a framework that allows for integration with (natural) audio and video. Face and body animation enables the integration of synthetic talking characters into an interactive media presentation. 2D mesh animation can be used to overlay an image or video over a movie (e.g., to integrate advertisements into the movie). 3D mesh coding allows for compressing a VRML ASCII file down to 2%–4% of its original size without visual degradation, for error resilient-transmission, and for incremental ...
