In recent years, the telecommunication, computer animation, and multimedia industries have seen an increasing demand for interactive multimedia services over broadband networks. The efficiency of the coding schemes used for compressing the multimedia content, the ability to support alpha-blending, and the flexibility to encode multiple levels of details of a scene in one stream are essential for the success of these emerging services.
