In this section, an overview of the MPEG-4 natural video coding tools is given. The functionalities and respective application scenarios are described briefly, followed by a short description of the principal MPEG-4 video coding approach.

8.1.1. Functionalities and Application Scenarios

The MPEG-4 Visual standard [MPEG4-2] comprises tools for coding natural visual sources—that is, sequences of images (video)—as well as still images (visual texture). Whereas the video coding is based on the well-known motion-compensated hybrid DCT coding scheme, the visual texture coding (VTC) is based on wavelet transform and zero-tree coding.
