A number of proprietary formats exist to convey streaming, real-time data over IP. Each owner of such a format may make use of MPEG-4 stream types in their context. Of course, such an approach cannot be considered as the basis for an open standardization process. On the other hand, unlike the transport of MPEG-4 content over MPEG-2, a specification for the transport of MPEG-4 over IP could not be accomplished within the MPEG community alone, because specifications in the realm of IP are typically dealt with by the IETF, even though their requests for comments (RFCs) do not have the formal status of an International Standard.
