7.4. Transporting MPEG-4 over MPEG-2

The MPEG-2 Systems standard [MPEG2-1] defines two methods of multiplexing data from a set of ESs into one serial bitstream. The resulting streams are called transport stream (TS) and program stream (PS). The TS was designed mainly for broadcast-type applications and is at the heart of most digital TV standards specified worldwide, including Europe's DVB [DVB], America's ATSC [ATSC], and Japan's ARIB [ARIB] standards. The program stream is used for storage-type applications, for example on DVDs.
