3.2. Semantic Description and Access Management

The previous section detailed the essentials of MPEG-4 stream description necessary to enable simple content access. In addition, there are auxiliary streams and descriptors providing a little more semantic information about media objects and enabling content access management in order to prevent unauthorized content distribution and use. Two major types of auxiliary streams are defined in MPEG-4 Systems—OCI streams and IPMP streams. The intent of OCI is clear: It provides what is called metadata, describing objects semantically. IPMP provides hooks to control the legitimate usage of MPEG-4 content.
