The MPEG-4 project started in 1992 with the goal of setting a standard for Very Low Bit Rate Audiovisual Coding [N271]. The initial participants were companies from the consumer electronics, computer, and telecom industries, as well as academia. There was the promise of great new coding methodologies that would greatly improve (video) compression efficiency over the existing hybrid DCT-based coding schemes.
