File compression tools go back a long way in the PC world, from the DOS-based PKZIP to the WinZip tools so common on people’s computers today. Any time you’ve received (or downloaded) a file with a .zip extension, you have had to deal with compressed files. Compression utilities are also a great idea when you need to bundle up a collection of digital pictures that you want to send to your friends or family. Instead of sending a number of attached images, which can make for huge emails and create long download waits on the receiving end, you can also use compression tools to package them all up into a smaller, more compact bundle.
