Systems are good because they create good habits, and good habits create or change behaviors. To help me stay connected, keep myself accountable to my job and my superiors, and develop new prospects and clients, I've created a system called the 5/10/15 plan (Figure 13.1).

My system will help you become accountable to yourself. Accountability is a matter of living on principle, showing honesty and integrity to work hard, and being responsible for your actions and your decisions. The 5/10/15 plan is an important tool to get you going in the right direction. You may not have thought about the need for a personal accountability system, but the 5/10/15 plan gives you a great road map for each workday.

Here's a quick explanation of how the 5/10/15 plan works:

  • The 5 means that you try to have five meetings or encounters a day. A meeting or encounter moves your agenda forward or gets you closer to your goal or desired outcome. A meeting doesn't mean sitting down in a conference room with eight colleagues at 9 AM or going out to lunch for 90 minutes. A meeting means making some sort of contact with a person, ...
