Media that can be recorded to, removed, and then transported to another device has long been a dominant force in most of the entertainment industries, long before the emergence of the Internet, microwave communications, etc. Metallic, shellac—paper—wax-based composites, and polyvinyl chloride records were long considered the only durable (primarily consumer) means to exchange recorded music and voice among users.
