Summary

The Introduction and first chapter of this book opened with a look at the broader sweep of change in the field of management and the resulting need to manage for employee performances that feature a high degree of initiative, enthusiasm, effort, creativity, and collaboration. These are the attributes we need to see in order to succeed in what I term a level-two economic environment, in which change and challenge is commonplace.

In a more traditional level-one environment, I might have started this book with a chapter on recognition and rewards. As long as the fundamentals of management are sound and do not need to be reexamined, there is no reason not to leap directly to recognition and reward when thinking about employee motivation. ...
